Garden is Producing

Garden is looking great.

I think the hot weather we are finally getting is helping. Gardening in Wyoming can be a challenge but the rewards are worth the effort. As I write this the temperature is 100 degrees and the humidity is too low, under 10 % to measure. Takes a little extra water to keep the humidity up during these hot days to keep the veggies growing nicely.

Happy Gardening - I hope the warm weather stays for a while, but not too hot!

Summer Ending Soon

Notice the days are getting shorter? No more sun at nine in the evening. Fall may not be far off, but I really like the change of seasons.

Remember the old joke, name the four seasons? (Salt, pepper, mustard and catsup)
My seasons are, Golf, TV Reruns, Vacation and Football

Snow, Snow and More Snow

Is it really only the middle of November? Here in the high country of Wyoming I have already scooped 30 inches of snow. Okay, I lied, I used my snow blower, sorry extremely green people but I am getting too old to shovel snow.
So—this begs the question, don’t you love it when someone says, “this begs the question?” Why do we still live here---Answer, because the rest of the year, it is fabulous.
So—how do I cope? Easy, I wear shorts and sandals year round.
* I turn up the thermostat to 80 degrees.
*I mow the grass even when it is covered with snow.
* I turn the heat on high or ultra high if I can find it, and drive the pickup around town with my windows down.
* I build snowmen and put sunglasses on them so they look cool and summery. Is summery really a word?
*And last of all (note how I cleverly did not say, last but not least) I go to Wyoming football games, set in the student section, take off my shirt, paint WYO on my chest and pretend like it is not cold.
No-Forget the last one—it was a lie.

Indian Summer

It was cold in Wyoming, now it’s warm again. This time of year has been called Indian Summer for a long time. Now that I’ve got your attention by casually mentioning the weather and everyone loves talking about the weather. Here is why this time of year is called Indian Summer. I have no idea—just kidding.

People have speculated for two-hundred years over the derivation of the term Indian Summer. Many guesses as to where it came from have been tried but here is the correct and proper answer—or maybe I made it up yesterday.

Indian summer which must follow a hard frost is named after the time of year when the indigenous peoples of the plains harvested crops. Crops the natives planted east of the Missouri River and the harvest of wild plumbs and roots west of the big river. It was also the time for hunting, curing and storing of the meat for the winter sure to come.

There you have it from the one who knows—or made it up—Indian Summer!
