Early Spring in Wyoming

Great weather the past two days, sunshine, calm, jacket weather with no need for the gloves and stocking hats –this has been the mildest January I can remember. We live at 7,200 feet and expect lots of snow and wind this time of year. But this year has been so mild it seems like March already. And as I sit here watching golf on TV- the storm warning crawls across the top of the screen. Snow and wind warning from six tonight to six tomorrow night, YES, enough of this 40 degree stuff, it is again winter in Wyoming.

Ah The Easy Life of a High School Coach

Even I could not make this up--

For those of you have been with me since my old days blogging on AOL you are well aware that I am a high school teacher and coach (for 41 years).

We are often told, good naturedly I hope, what a nice cushy job coaching indoor track is. Yes Virginia, there is an indoor track season in Wyoming. Well let me tell you about my weekend.

-Saturday morning-

Left house, 4:05 Am
Loaded bus, 4:15 AM
Departed for track meet, 4:30
Five hour and five minutes later, we arrive at meet site
Great track meet –Kids preformed, and conducted themselves wonderfully

Leave for home sometime after nine, I was nearly comatose by this point so am not sure of exact time

Roads were not bad but a bit slick in places – typical winter roads in the Cowboy state- a bit slower

Arrive back at high school, 3:30 AM
Back home, 3:40 AM
Bed at last, after a nice 23 hour and 35 minute day –ah the good life
Sunday, turned into vegetable
Monday morning, back to school
Tuesday morning, practice at six AM

Attention Bad Weather

Yesterday while watching a game on television the local emergency warning system kicked in. All channels were temporally interrupted for a severe weather warning. Blizzard coming, prepare yourself, foot and a half of snow, seventy-five mile an hour winds, danger for the next 24 to 36 hours. So what happened? A little wind, up to thirty or so, and not one flake of snow, didn’t need the food/water and flashlight the warning reminded us we needed.

Now I live in a place where we get a hundred plus inches of snow each year and was not worried about another fourteen or fifteen inches. Not sure how much it cost us taxpayers, who obviously cannot watch the weather channel ourselves, to get these bogus warnings. So why am I complaining? The interruption shut off my DVR that was busy recording a very good Humphrey Bogart movie, but weren’t they all very good?

Ah- enjoying the sunshine and mild winter in Wyoming.

The Lawmakers are Back

I feel better now that congress is back in action. I worry when they are away from Washington, afraid they might go home for a few days and get in touch with reality, heaven forbid.
Looks like we start out the year with lower social security taxes, wonder why? Can’t help but think congress wants that system to go broke faster than expected so they can make even more changes for us old timers.
My new year’s resolution- read more fun stuff and less news.
